About Us

Since its foundation in 1984, the college has aspired to provide an all-round education to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, and to every student who seeks it. In the first academic year, 1984–85, the strength was about 120 students; today it is close to a thousand. The college also runs postgraduate programmes, M.A. and M.Com.

Run by the D.C.M. Society of India, it stands on the Ahilyashram campus in Nana Peth, Pune.

Our journey

1906

Depressed Classes Mission of India founded

Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde establishes the Mission on 18 October 1906, under the guidance of Justice N. G. Chandavarkar, to work against untouchability at a national scale.

1908

The Mission's institutional work begins

On 22 June 1908 the Mission's practical work starts in earnest — schools, hostels and dispensaries for students of the Depressed Classes.

1912

Ahilyashram rises in Nana Peth, Pune

The Mission's headquarters move from Mumbai to Pune; the Ahilyashram campus is built on the same ground where Mahatma Jyotiba Phule had opened India's first school for Dalit children in 1852.

1984

The college is established

The college opens with roughly 120 students, recognised by the Government of Maharashtra and affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (Reg. No. PU/PN/AC/060/1984).

Today

Close to a thousand students, UG and PG

Undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Arts and Commerce, an active IQAC, and an NSS/NCC-driven culture of service — still on the same Ahilyashram ground.

Background of the D.C.M. Society of India

The Depressed Classes Mission Society of India has carried one conviction across twelve decades: that education is the surest ladder out of caste-based exclusion. The Society remains the parent trust of this college.

Society history

Founded 18 October 1906 in Mumbai; headquarters moved to Pune in 1912. Placeholder — add the full society history write-up.

Our Founder

Founder's portrait

Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde

Founder, Depressed Classes Mission of India, 1906

Born in Jamkhandi in 1873, Shinde returned from his studies in England in 1903 and dedicated his life to social and religious reform. Reading the 1901 census, he concluded that roughly a third of India's population lived under the weight of untouchability, and built a national mission in response. He opened a night school for the children of untouchables in Pune as early as 1905, founded the Mission in 1906, and by 1912 had built the Ahilyashram campus. He handed the Mission's leadership to Dalit representatives in 1923.

Our Inspiration

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee of the Constitution of India and argued throughout his life that the annihilation of caste required both law and learning: a community's dignity is won as much in the classroom as in the courts. The college carries his name alongside Maharshi Shinde's, in the spirit both men worked in, structural exclusion answered with structural access.

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule

Ahilyashram stands on the ground where Mahatma Phule had opened India's first school for Dalit children in 1852. The college continues that work of making education reachable for those it was long denied to.

Vision

To remain a trusted, affordable route into higher education for students from every community in central Pune, while meeting the rigour and reporting standards expected of a NAAC-accredited institution.

Mission

Upliftment of underprivileged sections of society through academic excellence, affordable access to higher education, and structured skill development.

Objectives

  • Provide quality UG and PG education in Arts and Commerce
  • Widen access for SC, ST, OBC and economically weaker students
  • Build employability through skill and certificate courses
  • Sustain a documented culture of quality via the IQAC
  • Extend the college's work into the surrounding community

Core values

  • Dignity and equality of every learner
  • Social justice as an educational purpose
  • Transparency and verifiable documentation
  • Service to the community
  • Academic integrity

About IIQA

The Institutional Information for Quality Assessment (IIQA) is the first formal step in the NAAC accreditation process. Before an institution can submit its Self Study Report, it files the IIQA — a structured account of its infrastructure, faculty strength, academic programmes and student-support facilities, confirming that it meets NAAC's basic eligibility norms.

Filing the IIQA is how the college places its core institutional data on record with NAAC and opens the formal assessment cycle that the SSR, DVV clarification and peer-team visit follow.
